In case you haven’t seen it…rapper Kanye West slammed Zappos in a recent interview. According to the New York Daily News, “on novelist Bret Easton Ellis’ podcast Monday, West slammed the CEO of the shoe retailer for selling a ‘s–t product.'”
“I got into this giant argument with the head of Zappos that he’s trying to tell me what I need to focus on,” the 36-year-old rapper said. “Meanwhile, he sells all this s–t product to everybody, his whole thing is based off of selling s–t product.”
So…it begs the question…what would YOU do if someone with a lot of notoriety said something so outrageously negative about YOUR business?
Here’s what Zappos, well-respected for delivering on ultimate customer experiences, did — and it proves, once again, why they are so awesome.
- Zappos put up a web page selling a toilet and a plunger. In the copy, they say: “Interested in buying sh-t product? You’ve come to the right place! Here at Zappos.com, we happily sell sh-t products to everybody!”
The “customer reviews” are hilarious, as well. One commenter wrote, “So I’m not sure if the sizing chart was inaccurate or what, but this didn’t fit on my foot well AT ALL, plus now I’m covered in blue water that my neighbor said looks and smells like “1000 Flushes”. I’ve never heard of that shoemaker, and I didn’t pay top dollar for no-name knockoff merchandise, Zappos. Needless to say, this will be returned as soon as I figure out how to get both feet out of it.”
By the way, as a part of this marketing brilliance, Zappos priced the toilet and plunger at $100,000! (But, they WILL ship it for free!)
The result? Zappos looks like the smart, savvy company that they are — and, they made the person criticizing them look (once again, in my opinion) like an ass.
Another example of why Zappos is so distinctive…
